Definition of Dead Space / No Man’s Land:
“An area not suitable or used for occupation or habitation”
– Meriam Webster dictionary
“Deadspaces can be for no one and for everyone, or they can be open only to particular constituencies…. it may be accessible only to those who practice a certain faith; it may even be a place so feared that no one is to be there except for the dead.”
– Aimee Michele Hultquist , Syracuse University
As an architect, I tend to think what kind of situation “the end” is in our point of view. Our biggest challenge as architects is to create a space where there is no chance of it to develop deadspaces or even become one. Sometimes we even try to conquer deadspaces that already exist so they can turn into a place for activity. But when I think about “The End”, the true end of our world, I think of it as a state where the spaces are no longer for human to inhabit – eternal dead space. Nothing can revive it and no one can even escape from it.
For this artwork, I want to create what I imagine that kind of dead space for people to experience it. To create the experience, I built a descending dark narrow space with infinity light box and sound installation inside. Dark narrow space with sound installation is used to create pressing isolation while the descending pathway is to create a vulnerable state of being forced to go downwards. As for the infinity light box by the end of the passage is to create an unreachable end creating the feeling of desperation.
